VANCOUVER – As Canada celebrates Earth Day, the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) continues its commitment to environmentally responsible and sustainable operations at its head office, warehouses, and retail stores.
Last year, the LDB recycled more than 3,117 tonnes of cardboard, paper, and soft plastic, which is equivalent to the weight of 22 blue whales. The organization is also carbon neutral – it has invested in 24,873 tonnes of BC carbon offsets since 2010.
The LDB believes in being Power Smart, too. High-efficiency LED lighting is standard for all new and remodelled BC Liquor Stores (BCLS). Six BCLS locations were completely outfitted with LED lighting in 2017, bringing the total number of stores that have been upgraded to 19.
Another example of the organization’s commitment to sustainability is the milestone reached by BCLS #204 in Ganges in becoming the LDB’s first zero-waste store. The Salt Spring Island location is now 100 per cent garbage free thanks to a pilot project initiated by the store’s manager. Everything the store uses – such as cardboard, mixed plastics, metal, and compost – is recycled.
Quick Facts:
• Each year, BC Liquor Stores customers return around 93 million empty beverage alcohol containers for recycling.
• The LDB is carbon neutral: it has invested in 24,873 tonnes of BC carbon offsets since 2010 – equivalent to a passenger vehicle driving 2,448 times around the Earth.
• In 2017, the LDB recycled more than 3,117 tonnes of cardboard, paper, and soft plastic – equivalent to the weight of 22 blue whales.
• The paper bags used by the majority of BC Liquor Stores are made from 97 per cent post-consumer recycled content, and plastic bags are made in BC from 20 per cent recycled plastic bottles.
