BC Liquor Stores are giving dry graduation events across the province the ‘thumbs up’ as part of their annual Support Dry Grad fundraising campaign.
Throughout the month of March, BC Liquor Stores’ customers are encouraged to donate a dollar or more to support alcohol-free graduation celebrations in their communities. In return, customers will receive a bright ‘thumbs up’ sticker on which to write their name and display in-store to show their support for keeping young people safe.
“High school graduation is a significant rite of passage. We want to make sure it’s safe and alcohol-free, as well as memorable,” said Blain Lawson, General Manager and CEO, BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB), which operates BC Liquor Stores. “Every year, customers generously support our efforts, giving right back to the young people in their own communities.”
Last year, BC Liquor Stores raised $280,376, which was distributed to events that supported an estimated 53,000 graduating high school students. Every year School Districts from across the province are asked to apply; donations collected by stores within the district’s catchment area are divided among participating schools in that district.
The Support Dry Grad campaign is an integral part of efforts by the LDB to prevent underage drinking and promote zero consumption by minors. Since its inception in 2001, the campaign has raised more than $7 million towards alcohol-free graduation events.
